AB OBJECTIVES: Developing and producing appropriate educational materials
on HIV-AIDS is the challenge of the day. A base line survey on young
people (School going) of the city of Ahmedabad revealed that 80% of them
have never heard of HIV AIDS. Taking the opportunity of Kite Flight
Festival--which falls on 14th January every year, GAP has launched a
novel idea of bringing the message to the youngsters. METHODOLOGY: The
kite flying ceremony is observed all over Gujarat and specially in
Ahmedabad where International Kite flight festival also being held every
year. GAP took the advantage of this day and printed different messages
about HIV and AIDS on the kites. 5000 such kites were distributed in the
innercity area. From the terrace, the kites were flown and the cut kites
were picked up by others and the messages were read. A special
competition was organised: Yellow kite versus Red kite, each colour
symbolised HIV positive and condom, respectively. RESULT: This new
methodology to bring the message to youngsters brought a lot of
enthusiasm amongst them. A door to door sample survey was carried out 2
days after the festival in the inner city area and it was observed that
60% of the houses surveyed have got the kite and read the messages. They
were happy to note the message AIDS is preventable and conveyed that,
they would like to know more about AIDS from GAP. CONCLUSION: We find
that the method is very good and effective. We would like to use this
approach next year in much bigger scale.
